Delhi Daredevils had an underwhelming campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League. They managed to fetch only 5 wins out of the 14 matches and finished the league stage as the bottom placed team.

Besides the disastrous season as a team, Delhi also lost the services of their skipper Gautam Gambhir as he stepped down from the job after playing only 6 matches. Furthermore, Gambhir didn’t feature in the playing XI of Daredevils in the remaining 8 games.

While everyone felt that Gauti had voluntarily dropped himself from the eleven considering his form, the man himself has now come up with a statement asserting he was ready to play every game and never snubbed himself from the playing XI.

“I never dropped myself from the playing XI. If that was the case, then I would’ve announced the retirement as well. A lot of cricket is still left in me,” Gambhir said while speaking to ABP News.

The 36-year-old also explained the rationale as to why he stepped down from the captaincy midway through the season.

“The team was losing matches continuously under my leadership and I resigned taking the whole responsibility for the same. But I never rejected from playing in the side and the team management and Ricky Ponting is also aware of this fact,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir, who has led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles, concluded by saying that he has no intentions to retire from competitive cricket as yet.

“I am not retiring right now. The next season of IPL is still a year away and if I do well in the first-class season, then I will play next year as well,” Gambhir signed-off.

It is worth mentioning here that the 23-year-old Shreyas Iyer led Delhi in the remaining games after Gambhir’s resignation. Iyer did a commendable job in the last few games as DD beat Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to finish off the season.
