Chennai Super Kings hosted the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first match of Super Sunday (May 13) at the MCA Stadium, Pune.

CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and invited SRH to bat first. The table-toppers rode on Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson’s 123-run partnership for the second wicket to put 179/4 on the board. While Dhawan scored a scintillating 49-ball 79, Williamson made a classy 51 off 39 balls.

In reply, CSK openers – Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson – took the game away from SRH with their herculean 134-run stand. While Watson got out for a blazing 35-ball 57, Rayudu remained unbeaten on 100 to saw his side home with an over to spare.

Following the dismissal of Watson, Sandeep Sharma removed Suresh Raina cheaply which led to Dhoni’s arrival at the crease. Needing 42 runs to win in 35 balls, the CSK captain scored an unbeaten 20 off 14 balls (1 four and 1 six) as CSK chased down the target with 8 wickets in hand.

However, during his stay at the crease, Dhoni got a lifeline as Manish Pandey dropped a sitter at long-on off Shakib Al Hasan’s bowling. Since Pandey is widely regarded as one of the best Indian fielders going around, the drop catch came as a surprise to many. No wonder, Dhoni was left bemused by the turn of events.
