The 40th match of IPL 2018 witnessed Rajasthan Royals taking on the Kings XI Punjab at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium Jaipur, where the former registered a comprehensive 15-run victory.
After opting to bat first, Rajasthan rode on Jos Buttler’s 58-ball 82 to put a competitive total of 158/8 on the board. At one point in time, RR were looking all set for a score close to 180 but Andrew Tye’s remarkable spell (4-0-34-4) put a break on the run flow.
In reply, KXIP lost their first three wickets for just 19 runs with Chris Gayle, Ravichandran Ashwin and Karun Nair recording the scores of 1, 0 and 3 respectively. Although KL Rahul stood his ground and selected his shots to perfection, Punjab continued to lose wickets from the other end.
When KXIP were tottering at 81 for 6 in 13.3 overs, Rahul up the ante and recorded his fourth fifty of this year’s IPL. However, with the constantly upward going required run-rate KXIP needed someone to play a blinder and given the death-overs bowling skills of Jofra Archer and Jaydev Unadkat it was always going to be a difficult task.
The duo of Archer and Unadkat conceded 51 runs in the last 5 overs – a stellar effort considering the circumstances. Rahul’s mesmerizing 70-ball 95* (11 fours and 2 sixes) eventually went in vain as RR restricted KXIP to 143/7 in their 20 overs.
Twitterati were impressed to see the way RR players put on a complete show against one of the top sides of this year’s IPL. Here are some of the top tweets hailing Rajasthan’s win despite KL Rahul's masterclass.
Time to think about reducing the quantum of loss for #KXIP

That stage of the tournament where you don’t want the NRR to take a serious beating... #RRvKXIP #IPL
Heroic knock by Rahul, but honours with Rajasthan. This is a fine win, dispelling a lot of skepticism (mine included) about the team

Wonderful innings from KL Rahul in that surface, reduced the margin of defeat considerably. But Rajasthan Royals will be delighted with this win. They are still in it and if they play to potential they could still make it to the top 4 #RRvKXIP
