IPL 2018: Sanjay Manjrekar doesn't think Virat Kohli is as good as AB de Villiers in T20s

Former Aussie pacer Shaun Tait backs Virat Kohli over AB de Villiers.

Both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are the force of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). But one of them has a slight edge over other. The cricket pundit Sanjay Manjrekar thinks it's De Villiers who is ahead of Virat in the shortest format of the game.

“When it comes to Test match cricket I don’t think there is any dispute at this stage of their respective careers, Virat Kohli is the better batsman for me. In 50-overs cricket, Kohli is among the all-time greats. But in T20s and especially IPL, AB has the edge of Kohli,” said Manjrekar during a show on ESPNcricinfo.

Shaun Tait, the former Aussie cricketer, was also in discussion. He said it's tough to find a weakness of Virat's batting. Tait said the South African may give the bowlers an option sometimes, but not Kohli. “I have unfortunately bowled to both these batsmen and unsuccessfully. And I found personally that bowling to Virat is a lot tougher. It is difficult to find a weakness with Kohli in T20s, while AB sometimes gives you options” said Tait.

But Manjrekar is convinced that De Villiers' range of shots keeps him above the Indian skipper. "Bowling to AB will be more difficult in pressure situations because of his unorthodox gameplay. AB, for once he goes from leg stumping to outside off stump when the bowler bowls which is something Virat doesn’t do,” said the former cricketer.

He added, “T20 is about power game and in this season of IPL the longest six has come for 111m and it is AB who had struck that.”

Manjrekar backed the explosive Proteas batsman but is aware of the fact that he fails to perform under pressure. Tait added that's where Virat is above De Villiers.
