West Indian cricketer Carlos Brathwaite has claimed on Tuesday (8 May) that the T20 format suits the Caribbean players and that’s the reason of a number of players’ participating in the T20 leagues across the globe.

He is currently a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard are among others who have been playing in the tournament at the moment.

Besides IPL, they have been also playing in the T20 tournaments across the globe likes of Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League, and Pakistan Super League. Even, they received criticism for giving preference to franchise leagues over international cricket, but Brathwaite believes that they need to accept it the trend.

As per reports in Hindustan Times, Brathwaite said, “It is something ICC needs to adjust. The West Indies players are not the only ones who have picked other leagues. We have seen some England players going for white-ball contracts and South Africans going for Kolpak. People need to accept it (the trend).”

He further added on the same, “International cricket is still the pinnacle and more often you will be judged on your exploits there. But at the end of the day, we are professionals who need to earn a living. Some cricketers will continue to play Tests, ODIs while others will play in franchise T20 Leagues. It’s very difficult to judge as you never know the family circumstances of a player.”

Commenting on West Indian players’ participation in the T20 leagues, the 29-year-old all-rounder said, “We are a naturally expressive people. T20 is a very expressive format. It’s for people seeking celebration. A relaxed lot basically, who wants to go out there and enjoy. It suits our lifestyle.”

However, Carlos has not yet featured in the playing XI of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018 so far, but he wants to continue work hard “until his turn comes”.

Brathwaite signed off by saying, “The quality of the squad is such that there is no guarantee for a place in the playing XI. We have some highly skilled foreign players like Rashid Khan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammed Nabi, Chris Jordan, and Alex Hales. It’s quite a competition. Tom (Moody) has expressed the need to rotate foreign players. So, I am continuing to train hard until my turn comes.”
