India U19 World Cup star Shubman Gill has garnered praise from Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) wrist spinner Piyush Chawla after hitting a match-winning half-century against the dangerous Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Eden Gardens on Thursday (3 May).

The 18-year-old Gill made most of Nitish Rana’s absence and played a crucial inning of an unbeaten-57 off 36 balls that was his maiden IPL fifty to help KKR to beat the formidable CSK by 6-wicket victory in an IPL 2018 encounter in Kolkata. This home victory helped the KKR in climbing to the third spot in the IPL 2018 points table with five wins of their 9 matches so far in the tournament.

As per reports in IANS, Chawla said at the post-match press conference, “Before the start of the matches, during our camp...I had said that he is a special talent. Today he proved it.”

He further said of Gill, “Nitish was injured and he was doing well for us. We needed somebody who can graft the innings and he did exactly the same, what the team demanded from him.”

Now, the Purple Army will next take on Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday (6 May) at Wankhede Stadium and Chawla said Rohit Sharma and Co. can be dangerous because of their failure so far.

He signed off by saying, “T20 is a kind of format where no team is easy. If you see Mumbai Indians they have proved it in the IPL. They are at the bottom of the table right now but these kind of teams are even more dangerous. So we have to play good cricket to come on top.”
