IPL 2018: Virat Kohli’s comment and gestures on Sunil Narine’s action ruffles a few feathers during RCB-KKR match

RCB lost to KKR by 6 wickets on Sunday, April 29, 2018.

Virat Kohli allgedly told umpires that Narine was 'throwing the ball' while bowling

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders played out a decent IPL match in Bangalore on Sunday, which was won by KKR easily by 6 wickets. However, amidst the joyous celebrations of KKR winning the game, a very big thing went unnoticed by many people on the ground and even in the media.

While facing Sunil Narine during the game in Bangalore on Sunday night, Kohli made a few gestures and then a comment that didn’t amuse anyone and was not exactly in the spirit of the game. Virat Kohli took a dig at Sunil Narine’s reworked action and his gestures referred to the alleged ‘illegality’ in Narine’s action. “Virat Kohli just said at the completion of over “Battaa mar raha hai (he is throwing the ball)” to the umpire referring to Narine #RCBvKKR,” said a Twitter post.

On Sunday, Nigel Llong and Anil Chaudhary were the umpires and it was clear that the RCB skipper was passing ‘judgment’ on Narine’s action. It is not a player’s job to pass judgment on bowler’s actions and as per rules, is an umpire’s job. The action is reported by the umpire to the regulator, the BCCI, ICC or the MCA.

Narine’s action has been reported many times in the past, most recently, in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Pune Mirror newspaper reported that the two umpires and match referee Manu Nayyar did not find anything wrong with the bowler’s action. The BCCI officials also told the newspaper that they have not received any complaints from the match officials.

These things happen on the field but I am not supposed to speak on the matter to the media. You should contact the BCCI,” the match referee said. RCB manager Avinaash Vaidhya expressed ignorance and said: “Nothing of that sort has happened and the match officials have not spoken to us.

Kohli had hit 68* in RCB’s innings, but couldn’t keep RCB from losing the match, while Narine went wicket-less, but scored 27 off 19 balls, opening the batting for KKR in the chase.
