IPL 2018: Match 18 – KKR v KXIP - Gayle-Rahul storm KXIP to win over KKR despite rain

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and King XI Punjab (KXIP) met in the 18th match on the Indian Premier League (IPL). This was a meeting of second spot holders KKR and fourth place holder KXIP.

Ashwin won the toss and chose to field first. KKR made no change to their playing XI, but KXIP brought in Ankit Rajpoot for Mohit Sharma.

Mujeeb gave KXIP the perfect start, getting Narine’s wicket for 1. Then Robin Uthappa (34 off 23 balls with 5 fours and 2 six) and Chris Lynn (74 from 41 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes) added 72 runs for the second wicket. Uthappa and Rana fell in succession, as Lynn was caught behind going for a big slog.

Dinesh Karthik scored 43 off 28 balls for 6 fours. KKR made 191/7 in 20 overs, as Andrew Tye finished 2/30 in 4 overs.

Kings XI Punjab started brilliantly with KL Rahul and Chris Gayle taking the bowling on and bringing up the 50 in just 3 overs. KXIP ended up scoring 73 runs in the power play overs and 96 in 8.2 overs before rains came down.

After the rain gods relented, target was adjusted to 125 off 13 overs, with KXIP needing 29 off 28 balls. Gayle and Rahul both brought up their fifties with sixes. It was Gayle's third fifty plus score in three matches.

Rahul was then caught by Curran off Narine for 60 in 27 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes. In the end, it was Chris Gayle (62* off 38 balls with 6 sixes and 5 fours), who finished the match for KXIP, as they ensured a comfortable win by 9 wickets via DLS method.
