After a nerve-wrecking victory against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday (April 14), Shreyas Iyer has hailed the Delhi Daredevils bowlers for restricting the mighty batting line-up of MI below 200 despite the early mauling.

After being put into bat, MI openers – Suryakumar Yadav (53 runs off 32 balls) and Evin Lewis (48 runs off 28 balls) led the foundation for a massive total with a blistering 102-run stand in just 9 overs. The stylish left-hander Ishan Kishan also chipped in with a quickfire 44 runs off 23 balls.

However, the DD bowlers did exceedingly well to control the run-flow in the later part of MI innings. Trent Boult, Daniel Christian and Rahul Tewatia claimed 2 wickets each for the Daredevils whereas Mohammed Shami scalped one wicket.

In reply, DD got off to a splendid start as Jason Roy and skipper Gautam Gambhir put on 50 runs for the first wicket in just 5.1 overs. After Gambhir’s departure for 15, Roy along with Rishabh Pant (47 runs off 25 balls) added 69 runs for the second wicket. Roy was particularly severe on the Mumbai bowlers as he remained unbeaten on 91 off 53 balls to see Delhi home in the final delivery of the match.

“Obviously we were expecting (a total) around 220. But our bowlers restricted the score and really bowled well in patches. The comeback was superb by the bowlers,” Iyer, who remained unbeaten on 27 with Roy till the end, quoted as saying by PTI.

“We were waiting for this win especially against Mumbai Indians. It’s a great comeback and all of us contributed,” he added.

The last over was a dramatic one with Delhi needing 11 to win and fetching 10 of those in the very first 2 deliveries off Mustafizur Rehman courtesy a four and a six from Roy. However, he couldn’t connect the next three balls and somehow managed to get the bat on ball off the final delivery to seal the deal for DD.

“They really bowled some good slower ones. Even in the last over Jason found it difficult to pick. But we knew if we stayed till the end we will finish the game,” Iyer said.

Talking about his own batting, the 23-year-old said he has become choosy at the beginning lately.

“I used to be careless regarding the shots and after some years I realised that if I take some time I could cover up (the slow start). At the end, anyway, I am going to cover up and finish the game and that’s what I told myself,” Iyer concluded.
