Dinesh Karthik, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain and wicketkeeper-batsman, has come out, rightfully, in support his teammate Vinay Kumar. Vinay was given the responsibility to bowl the last over of the run chase against the Chennai Super Kings in which Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja needed to score 17.

Unfortunately, Vinay started of the over very badly. He bowled a no-ball that went for six and the follow-up free hit ball was hit by Bravo for a four and Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning runs when he smashed Vinay for a 6 over the mid-wicket boundary.

Vinay was widely criticised for his over by the Kolkata Knight Riders fans over the social media. And so, his captain has backed him when he needs it. Also stating he has faith in the strong individual that Vinay is. He was quoted by Wisden India as saying, “He’s bowled some real pressure overs in both games. I’ve given him the 20th over in both games, so those aren’t easy overs to bowl and he’ll be the first one to say he could have bowled a lot better, but having said that I know he’s a strong character and he’ll come back strong,”

Talking about the closeness of the contest versus CSK despite posting a formidable looking 202 on the board. Dinesh said, “In this format, and in this tournament particularly, you expect close games. Because all the teams are equal, games go down to the wire. The defeat didn’t shock us, both teams played equally good cricket, they just got over the line,”

Dinesh also talked about the areas of concerns for his team for upcoming matches. He replied to the query on his fast bowling resources, “I don’t think it’s a concern (that pacers are leaking too many runs). (But) that’s something that we need to look into. It’s early days in the tournament so there is always room for improvement, We’ve addressed the issue (of poor fielding) and this is something all players are aware of and I think it’s one aspect that all players can contribute to. We’ve addressed it and we’re pushing for the best performance in the forthcoming games.”
