IPL 2018: List of the players who have missed the IPL 11 due to serious injuries

Here are the players who will miss the entire IPL 2018 tournament due to injuries.

Indian Premier League started off with a bang

The 11th edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) started off brilliantly with Chennai Super Kings defeating defending champions Mumbai Indians by 1 wicket in a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

However, the excitement had started well before the tournament began, as in January this year; we witnessed the IPL 2018 auction. This auction was more exciting than the IPL, as a majority of players were in the auction and players went for astronomical sums of money.

Teams bid on the players keeping a set plan in their mind and got players according to necessity. But in an unfortunate turn of events, injuries started to hit the tournament even before it went underway. Many big foreign players got injured and decided to miss the tournament to get fit.

Let’s have a look at the list of players who will miss the entire IPL tournament due to various injuries.

ZAHIR KHAN PAKTEEN (RR)

Afghanistan’s left arm chinaman bowler Zahir Khan Pakteen was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 60 lakhs in the IPL 2018 auctions. The 19-year-old cricketer had represented Afghanistan in two U19 World Cups. Zahir Khan was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury serious enough to ensure that he needed to be replaced.

Kiwi Mitchell Santner was supposed to make his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings, who picked him up for INR 50 lakhs in the IPL 2018 auction. The left-arm spinner had been a regular in the Kiwi limited overs team and has impressed one and all with his performances in Test arena as well.

Santner also impressed everyone with his batting abilities and this meant that CSK had a very good all-rounder at their hands in the auction. However, it was found out that a bone defect in his knee required surgery and this ruled him out of action for over nine months. This meant that Santner also missed the chance to play in his first ever IPL for a team like CSK.

Australian quick Mitchell Starc had put himself back into the IPL auction pool after a gap of two years and was immediately a hot property during the auction when his name came up. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) went all out for him and bought him for INR 9.4 crores.

Starc was supposed to be the main spearhead for KKR, along with Mitchell Johnson. However, Starc, who was on tour to South Africa, got injured due to a stress fracture in his right leg. It caused him to miss the fourth and final Test against Proteas and the whole IPL.

Jason Behrendorff was picked up by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.5 cr thanks to his performances in the Big Bash League over the years. Behrendorff also impressed all during the Australia limited-overs tour to India recently.

MI had many expectations from Behrendorff, as they had decided not to retain Lasith Malinga, but a severe back injury ruled Behrendorff out of the IPL 2018 before the start of the tournament and MI had to look for replacements.

Kedar Jadhav was bought by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for INR 7.8 cr. He is a handy finisher, part-time off-spinner and even keeps wickets if needed. However, Jadhav’s IPL 2018 was cut short in the first game against Mumbai Indians itself, as he tore his hamstring during a run and went off the field.

Though he came back in the final over to take CSK to an improbable win over MI, hitting a six and a four off Mustafizur; scans revealed that Jadhav suffered from grade II hamstring tear and was ruled out of the IPL 2018 entirely.

Replacement: David Willey (ENG)

NATHAN COULTER-NILE (RCB)

Nathan Coulter-Nile

Nathan Coulter-Nile was an asset for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2017 as the team reached the playoffs. A brilliant bowler at the top, Coulter-Nile is also a handy batsman capable of hitting some lusty blows during the last few overs.

However, Coulter-Nile was suffering from a back ailment which had seen him miss the Ashes 2017, which got aggravated and scans showed a hot spot in his lower spine and also showed an aggravation of his old stress fracture. This caused him to miss the whole of IPL 2018.

Replacement: Corey Anderson (NZ)

World’s no.1 Test bowler Kagiso Rabada was retained by the Delhi Daredevils using the RTM card for Rs 4.2 cr. Rabada had impressed everyone with his bowling since his debut and in IPL 2017; where he was good with both bat and ball. DD had expected him to play a big role in the 2018 edition.

However, Rabada was diagnosed with a lower back stress reaction ruling him out for three months, effectively putting him out of the IPL 2018 and he is racing against time to be fit for the SA tour to SL in July.

Pat Cummins made a stunning comeback to the cricketing world as he impressed one and all in both Test and limited overs cricket. Cummins had also played an important role for DD in IPL 2017 and entered the auction looking for new avenues.

Cummins was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 5.4 cr and was set to take over from the likes of Lasith Malinga and lead the attack with Jasprit Bumrah. However, he was diagnosed with “bone edema in his vertebrae” which translates to a swelling in the joint of the back.

This meant that he was ruled out of IPL 2018 and Mumbai Indians lost a very big star for the tournament.

Replacement: Yet to be decided
