IPL 2018: I&B Ministry gives nod to live uplinking of IPL matches

This year will see Doordarshan broadcasting the IPL for the first time.

The league starts tomorrow with the opening ceremony taking place prior to the game between the defending champions Mumbai Indians and returning from exile Chennai Super Kings.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has given its nod for temporary live uplinking of the Indian Premier League games for this season. The league starts from Saturday with the opening ceremony taking place prior to the game between the defending champions Mumbai Indians and returning from exile Chennai Super Kings.

This initiative has materialized after the Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI) had requested in a written letter to the Union Minister Smriti Irani for her help in getting the nod for live uplinking of the Indian Premier League (IPL). A ministry official said, as per Cricketnext, that the "Permission for temporary live uplinking of IPL tournament has been granted,"

It is noted that this request by the BCCI was followed because of the application from the official broadcaster Star India. Star India purchased the consolidated rights of the league in September for a whopping sum of 16,347.50 crores. Matches tend to be telecast deferred live but this move will help in the broadcast of IPL matches in real time.

Star India has agreed to share with Prasar Bharati the select matches of the IPL season on a one-hour deferred live basis with 50-50 revenue sharing, the broadcaster said in a tweet.

Smriti Irani too congratulated on the development with a tweet.

This is the first time IPL will be aired on the free network available of Doordarshan. This season is also an opportunity for Star India group of channels StarSports to set new standards for live IPL cricket experience and serve the best quality possible to the audiences. Star will be providing the live feed commentary of the IPL in various languages to reach to the wider cricket fan base around the country and the world. A lot of hard work will be done for the cricket loving people this IPL season then, by the Star team.
