Delhi Daredevils were hit by a major injury blow on Thursday, after their fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the IPL due to a lower back stress reaction. The fast bowler had a hectic home season and was called upon by South African captain Faf du Plessis whenever he needed a wicket at important junctures during the hard fought series against India and Australia.

Proteas team doctor Mohammed Moosajee said in a statement on Thursday, “Kagiso has been diagnosed with a lower back stress reaction, which will rule him out of cricket action for up to three months,”

“He will need a month’s break from all physical activity before commencing with a rehabilitation programme to get him ready for the series against Sri Lanka in July.” he further added.

Delhi Daredevils had bought Rabada for Rs. 4.20 crore using the RTM (right-to-match) card. The 22-year old fast bowler played 6 matches for the Delhi franchise in 2017 and picked up six wickets. He is currently ranked at the top of the ICC Test rankings for bowlers.

Daredevils have not confirmed whether they will seek a replacement for the fast bowler. They still have the services of two experienced overseas fast bowlers in Chris Morris and Trent Boult, the latter will now be expected to shoulder the responsiblity of leading the attack like he does for New Zealand.
