IPL 2018: Dean Jones believes Klassen is not the best replacement for Steve Smith

Ever since the whole ball-tampering saga concluded with Cricket Australia banning Steve Smith and David Warner for a year and subsequently BCCI doing the same for this IPL season, all eyes turned on the Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad for their replacements. While Sunrisers Hyderabad replaced Warner with the England right-hand opener Alex Hales, Rajasthan found Smith's replacement in Heinrich Klassen the South African wicketkeeper-batsman.

Klassen impressed everyone that saw the recently concluded limited overs series in South Africa where he looked at home against the Indian wrist spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal while his teammates struggled to pick them which played a big part in India winning their first ever bilateral ODI series in the country and also the T20I series. South Africa salvaged one win each in the ODIs & T20Is where it was Klassen who played the leading hand with the bat.

His presence would only help Rajasthan's balance, Dean Jones the ex Australian player though, believes Rajasthan were better off replacing Smith with the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsmen Luke Ronchi instead of Klassen. Dean tweeted in this regard making his views clear. Ronchi did very well in the recently played Pakistan Super League where he was the highest run-getter with 435 runs at an average of 40. Dean Jones was present as the coach of the Islamabad United in the league and he backs what he saw of Ronchi for the IPL.

Royals, though are backing Heinrich Klassen to do the job for them having shown batting prowess versus spin, a rare virtue for an overseas cricketer in the IPL. He has very safe behind the stumps too.

In time lies the answer whether Dean has got this one right or not. Klassen is a fine, fine player.
