Delhi Daredevils (DD) head coach –Ricky Ponting, On Monday, fired the DD camp up with his “go for the kill” speech at The Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in Delhi.

The two-time World Cup winning Australian captain’s positive frame of mind, which was naturally about winning, will hugely help the side in their mission for a maiden IPL trophy, says Shreyas Iyer.

As per Press Trust of India, Iyer said, “It has been really good with (Ponting so far). He has been pretty aggressive. He has got that positive frame of mind. When he came in and gave a speech to all of us, it really fired us up, we almost had goosebumps.”

Iyer further said that Ponting was just talking about winning the tournament not about the process in his warm-up opening speech, which gives the youngsters goosebumps ahead of the T20 extravaganza.

The right-hander further added, “He said that ‘we are here to win’. His frame of mind was pretty much about winning, not about the process. Normally, everybody comes in and talks a lot about the process but this guy had just one thing in his mind and that was to win.”

On being asked whether he brings in the typical Australian aggression with him, Iyer said, “We can say that way. When I say aggression, he gives us freedom as well. He has asked us to play our own game. He has got his own way of preparing every youngster and though it has been just three days, we all know that we will get to learn a lot from him.”

It is known that Ponting is known for his aggressive approach which is drastically different from former DD coach Rahul Dravid, but the 23-year-old batsman said “both have the same frame of mind”.

Iyer further stated, “Both (Ponting and Dravid) are equally good in their way. Dravid is more calm and cool, he nurtures the kids. Ricky is pretty opposite but both have the same frame of mind.”

Commenting on DD’s new skipper –Gautam Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) twice to IPL title, and Iyer believes his tremendous experience would definitely help the side in the IPL 2018.

He signed off by saying, “It is really helpful to have Gambhir as well. He has got tremendous experience and led KKR to title twice. He is also really good with the youngsters coming in.”

Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi Daredevils (DD) will kick off their IPL 2018 campaign against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at home ground Kotla on 8 April.
