The Decision Review System (DRS) is all set to make its debut in the eleventh edition of Indian Premier League, as confirmed by IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla. This is certainly a huge step taken by BCCI as it will help to eradicate the umpiring howlers from the cash-rich event.

"Yes, this idea has been going around for many years," IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla told PTI on Wednesday (March 21).

Each team is given one chance to review an umpiring decision during a T20 innings at the international level and the same regulation is expected to be implemented in the lucrative tournament as well. With this significant move, the IPL will now become the second T20 league after Pakistan Super League (PSL) to have DRS.

Apparently, the decision to use DRS in IPL 2018 emerged after a board meeting at Vishakapatnam in December 2017, where the 10 leading umpires from domestic circuit were given a brief concerning the technology by Denis Burns, the ICC umpires' coach and former Australia fast bowler turned umpire Paul Reiffel.

BCCI's stance on DRS has created a lot of hue and cry in the past. Earlier, they were reluctant to implement it stating that the technology wasn’t 100 percent accurate. In particular, the board officials and some of the senior Indian cricketers were against the ball tracking technology. However, with the improvement in technology and the addition of new tools, the BCCI had given it a green signal for the first time during the home series against England in 2016.

The 11th edition of IPL will kick off from April 7, with returning franchise Chennai Super Kings taking on the defending champions Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium.
