The South African batsmen failed to encounter the Indian wrist-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the ongoing six-match One Day International series,  due to which the hosts are down by 4-1 with the final ODI is slated to be held at SuperSport Park on 16 February.

Chahal (14) and Yadav (16), shared 30 wickets between themselves so far in the ODI series, having played a crucial role in India’s triumph in the One Day series 4-1 in the rainbow nation.  Legendary South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis believes that it is a learning curve for the Proteas and due to which the batters are struggling to counter Chahal and Kuldeep.

Speaking to Press Trust of India, Jacques Kallis said, “It takes time to read good leg-break bowlers. We have to accept we don’t have enough world class leg-spinners in our country. So, this is a learning curve for the youngsters in our team. Even we went through the same phase and we learnt with time.”

Kallis went to further opine that there is no perfect technique to playing wrist spin. He further added saying that experience is the key behind playing leg spin. "Even we went through the same phase and we learnt with time" added Kallis on the same.

Former Proteas skipper explained, “Experience is the key. There are basically two ways to read leg-break bowling. Either you pick up from wrists or wait for the ball to pitch. No two batsmen would employ the same technique. As one plays more international cricket, he would know what works best for him. Everyone devise their own mechanism to get out of trouble.”

He also admitted that there is a lack of depth in the current South African batsmen, saying, “Probably South Africa must have realized by now that they don’t have much depth when senior cricketers (AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis) get injured. They (CSA) need to look carefully about how they will expose youngsters to international cricket.”

Kallis, who will now join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp for the 11th edition of the IPL 2018, is happy with the balance of that side, especially having a talented bunch of India U-19 World Cup stars Shubman Gill, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi in the KKR squad.

The KKR coach further said, “We have got an experienced side and our first XI, as of now, looks pretty settled. We have some very talented youngsters as back-ups. One positive thing about this year’s squad is that we have proper balance for home and away conditions.”

Gautam Gambhir, who was leading KKR in the previous IPL seasons, will not available for the upcoming season –will play for Delhi Daredevils, and Kallis hints at Chris Lynn to lead KKR this time.

Kallis signed off by saying, “Yes, he is probably one of the candidates but we haven’t yet decided about it. Maybe, we will get to know in the next couple of weeks.”
