IPL 2018: Martin Guptill not getting an IPL contract left Michael Vaughan surprised

Although the Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction 2018 have ended a few weeks ago, the surprise element of many renowned T20 internationals remaining unsold are still the point of discussion. 

Former England cricketer and renowned Cricket Pundit –Michael Vaughan is surprised how Kiwi opener Martin Guptill didn’t get an IPL contract in the auction. 

The Black Caps’ opener –Guptill, who previously played for Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in the Indian T20 league, had a base price of rupees 75 lakh, but still was ignored by IPL franchises only because he didn't fit into their scheme of things. 

However, there was not only Guptill, who went unsold in the IPL Auction 2018, but there were so many big names of the game across the world did not also picked up by any franchise – namely the likes of Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Hashim Amla.

The 31-year-old right-hander is a key member of the New Zealand’s limited-overs’ outfit has played 151 One Day Internationals and 67 T20 Internationals for the Kiwis.

On Tuesday, Guptill played a wonderful knock of 65 off 40 balls to help the hosts to win a must-win match by 12-runs of the seven-match T20I Tri-series against England in Wellington.

In his knock at an amazing strike-rate off 162.50, the opener hit six boundaries and three mighty sixes, which left Vaughan amazed and later, he went on the social media to praise the batsman and express his surprise over his not getting IPL contract for the next season.

Vaughan wrote on his official Twitter handle, “Baffles me how Martin Guptill doesn’t get an IPL contract… Brilliant Batsman & unbelievable fielder …. !!!!!!!!!”
