IPL 2022: "A legend will always be a legend", Protea women's cricket great supports struggling Virat Kohli

Kohli hasn't been at his best in the ongoing IPL, with two golden ducks to his name

Virat Kohli | BCCI/IPLSouth African women’s cricketer Dane Van Niekerk has come out in support of the struggling RCB batter Virat Kohli.

On Wednesday (May 05), Van Niekerk shared an emotional message on Twitter, saying that Kohli made batting look effortless and that one disappointing season or tournament does not negate a decade of consistent performances.

"Stop looking for reasons to discredit what @imVkohli has done for the game of cricket!! On the up, over extra and made it look easy.. a legend will always be a legend.. accept it! A tournament, a season does not define over a decade of consistent performances!" she tweeted.

Virat played an innings of substance against the Gujarat Titans (GT) where he scored his first half-century of the season.

The former RCB skipper in his franchise’s recent match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) scored 30 but the strike rate was below 100. The skipper Faf du Plessis gave the team a quick start before he was dismissed for a well-made 22-ball 38.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore posted a score of 173/8 on the board in their 20 overs, on the back of some great hitting towards the end by Rajat Patidar (21 off 15 balls), Mahipal Lomror (42 off 27 balls), and Dinesh Karthik (26 off 17 balls).

Although the CSK batter Devon Conway scored a brilliant half-century (56 off 27 balls) but the Dhoni-led side eventually fell short of the target by 13 runs.

The 33-year-old Kohli has had a difficult time with the bat, with his last international century coming in 2019. This bad run has coincided with him quitting captaincy in T20Is and Tests and being replaced in one-day internationals.

But the last two outings have given millions of the fans a lot of hope that the flamboyant cricketer is slowly and steadily getting back to his dominant best. The Faf-led side is 4th on the points table with 6 wins in 11 matches and will next take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday (May 08) at the Brabourne Stadium.
