IPL 2021: "What has led him down is the shot selection," Gavaskar points out Samson's batting mistake

Sunil Gavaskar has also suggested Sanju Samson a solution for his poor shot selection.

Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar talked about the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson and he feels the talented batsman needs to work on his shot selection. Despite being among the highly-rated batsman, he hasn't been able to seal his place in the Indian team.

On Tuesday (September 21), Samson was dismissed cheaply against Punjab Kings after he ended up edging a short delivery to wicket-keeper KL Rahul. Gavaskar feels that shot selection has been the Kerala batsman's biggest bane.

"What has led him down is the shot selection. Even at the international level, he doesn't open the batting there. He was the second or the third wicket down. And he looks to hit the first ball out of the ground. That is impossible. That is absolutely impossible even if you've been in the richest vein of form. You have got to maybe knock it around for maybe twos and threes and get the feet moving and then look to play," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

When Samson gets an opportunity to play for Team India, some of his dismissals does point finger at his shot selection. He made his India debut in 2015 but could only play in one ODI and 10 T20Is so far.

Gavaskar suggested Samson to give himself more time in the crease which can make a difference in his shots. "That is something he is going to watch out for. Because otherwise, it is going to be a waste of such God-given talent.

"I have always said that a lot of shot selection boils down to temperament. That is what separates the men from the boys. And therefore, for him to go on and be a regular player for India, his shot selection has to be that much better," he said.
