IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals’ Akshar Patel returns COVID-19 positive ahead of upcoming IPL

Akshar will now have to isolate in the designated area outside the bio-secure environment for a minimum of 10 days.

Akshar Patel | BCCI/IPLAhead of the 2021 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Capitals (DC) have suffered a huge blow as spinning all-rounder Akshar Patel detected positive for COVID-19.

Speaking to ANI, sources in the DC camp disclosed the news.

"Unfortunately, Akshar has tested positive. He is isolating and all protocols are being followed," the source said.

Akshar is the second player after Kolkata Knight Riders (RR) batsman Nitish Rana to catch COVID-19. Rana, however, tested negative after returning a positive result on March 22. The southpaw served quarantine after the positive result, underwent a COVID-19 test on April 1 and tested negative.

According to BCCI SPO for IPL 2021, any player who tests positive for COVID-19 must isolate in the designated area outside the bio-secure environment for a minimum of 10 days.

"During the 10-day isolation, the individual must rest and avoid any exercises. The team doctor should regularly monitor the case. If symptoms worsen during the course of isolation, the individual must be hospitalised immediately," the SOP states.

BCCI and the IPL franchises must be sweating as the groundstaff in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium have also tested positive for Coronavirus.

Four franchises namely Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals have set up their base in Mumbai as of now. Wankhede is slated to host 10 IPL games this season.

The IPL 2021 is due to begin on April 9, with defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the tournament opener at Chepauk.
