Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore might have endured an underwhelming IPL 2019 campaign but the Indian captain still dominated the Twitter world during the 12th edition of the T20 league.

In a list released by Twitter India, Kohli was the second most talked about player on the micro-blogging site during IPL 2019 after CSK skipper MS Dhoni. Title-winner Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma secured the third spot in the list.

Surprisingly, Chennai Super Kings off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was more popular than Andre Russell and Hardik Pandya – the two all-rounders who dominated the cash-rich event thoroughly. Chirs Gayle, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and David Warner also made the top 10.

As far as the most discussed team is concerned – runners-up CSK took the honours while champions MI was second on the list. RCB and KKR also made the top 4 despite not qualifying to the play-offs.

When it comes to IPL 2019 final held in Hyderabad on Sunday (May 12), Mumbai Indians dominated the conversation on Twitter, owning 63% of total mentions versus Chennai Super Kings’ 37%.

During the 12th edition of IPL, Twitter also witnessed a record-breaking 27 million tweets, a 44% increase over 2018’s IPL-related tweets.

The Golden tweet of IPL 2019 was this post from MI all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who acknowledged MS Dhoni as his friend and source of inspiration.

"Fans love Tweeting about cricket and this year we saw a record-breaking 27 million Tweets around the IPL 2019 season. Twitter is the best way to see what's happening in the world of sports and to talk about it, so we're thrilled to see this incredible growth in IPL conversations this year," Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director, Twitter India said.

"We are looking forward to enhancing fan experiences on the platform as we go to the second half of the cricket season. We know conversations around the biggest global cricket tournament - the ICC Cricket World Cup is sure to take off on Twitter, too!"
