IPL 2019: RR v MI – Cricket Fraternity reacts as Steve Smith leads RR to 5-wicket win over MI

Gopal picked two wickets for RR | IANS File PhotoThe 36th match of the IPL 2019 was played between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. MI was looking to win the match and go to the top of the points table, while RR was looking for their 3rd win in the tournament. RR would be missing Jos Buttler for this match as well, who returned to England for the birth of his child.

Before the match, RR announced that Steve Smith will replace Ajinkya Rahane as the captain of the franchise for the remainder of the IPL 2019 and he came out for the toss. Smith won the toss and chose to bowl first. Quinton de Kock (65), Suryakumar (34) and Hardik Pandya (23) were the main scorers for the MI team as they put up 161/5 in 20 overs, while skipper Rohit fell for 5 runs, to a legspinner S Gopal. Gopal was also the best bowler for RR side with 2/21.

In reply, Rahane fell for 12, while new opening partner Sanju Samson made 35 in 19 balls. Though Ben Stokes fell for a duck, Steve Smith and Riyan Parag kept the chase going.  Parag fell for 43 in 29 balls, but Smith carried on for 59* in 48 balls and RR defeated MI by 5 wickets, their second win over MI this season and fourth on a trot. Rahul Chahar picked 3/29 and was the best MI bowler.
