Delhi Capitals registered a convincing seven-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Friday (April 12). By virtue of this win, the Shreyas Iyer-led side also climbed up to fourth spot in the points table.

Chasing 179 to win, Delhi lost Prithvi Shaw (14) and Shreyas Iyer (6) inside the powerplay. However, Dhawan and Rishabh Pant (46 off 31 balls) added 105 runs for the third wicket to put DC on the brink of victory. With 17 runs needed from as many deliveries, Pant threw his wicket away which led to Colin Ingram’s arrival at the crease.

After the culmination of 18th over, DC required 12 runs to finish things off while Dhawan needed 5 runs to complete his maiden IPL ton. But Ingram didn’t care for his partner’s milestone and struck a boundary and six in the penultimate over to guide the visiting team over the line with as many as seven balls to spare.

Shikhar Dhawan eventually finished with 97 not out off 63 deliveries. The southpaw’s dazzling knock was studded with 11 boundaries and 2 sixes.

Although Dhawan was seen applauding Ingram from the non-striker’s end after the match-winning six, Twitterati couldn’t stop feeling for the DC opener’s 3 runs.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony after receiving the Man-of-the-Match award, Dhawan said: “I knew it could be my first T20 hundred but the team goal is more important, hence I took that single rather than taking a huge risk.”

Delhi Capitals will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match on Sunday (April 14) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
