With the 12th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) is around the corner, Delhi Capitals on Thursday (March 14) roped in former India captain Sourav Ganguly as its advisor.

In his new role, Ganguly, who has previously led IPL franchises Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India, will work closely with Delhi’s head coach Ricky Ponting.

"I am very pleased to come on board with the Delhi Capitals," Ganguly quoted as saying by PTI.

"Having known the Jindals and the JSW Group for years, I am now excited to be a part of their latest sports venture. I am really looking forward to working with the players and the support staff," he added.

After years of underachievement, the Delhi franchise is looking to make a fresh start in IPL 2019 and thus they have made a lot of changes.

"Sourav is one of the most astute minds in world cricket. A lot of what we see in Indian cricket today was born because of Sourav. His aggression, positivity and never say die attitude are traits we want the Delhi Capitals team to imbibe. It is truly an honour that Sourav has chosen Delhi as his IPL team.

"I have no doubt that our team will benefit immensely from his experience, guidance and advice. Sourav has been like family to me and I am deeply humbled to have him as an adviser," said Delhi Capitals chairman Parth Jindal.

Shreyas Iyer, who captained in eight matches last season, has been appointed as a full-time captain of Delhi this year. Moreover, the squad also includes proven performers like Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris among others.

The IPL 2019 will get underway from March 23 while Delhi will start its campaign on March 24 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
