Virender Sehwag’s five-year association with IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab came to an end as the former KXIP opener and mentor announced his decision on Saturday on Twitter. Sehwag had first joined KXIP in 2014 as a player and since 2016 was part of the backroom staff.

Apart from being a mentor, he was also the head of cricket operations of the franchise and had a key role in the decision-making process.

However, the team’s fortune didn’t change much under Sehwag as the mentor, finishing eighth, fifth and seventh in previous three seasons of the IPL respectively. They started IPL 2018 on a good note, winning five of their first seven games under new surprise captain R Ashwin.

But the elation was short-lived, as they won only one match out of their last seven in the second half of the season, finishing seventh in the league stage.

I’ve received a mail from the franchise stating that they won’t be needing a brand ambassador and a mentor. I was happy being part of the Kings XI Punjab team. It was their decision, so I had no role in the decision-making process. I don’t think the incident (with Preity) had anything to do with my exit. If they want to have a new mentor or a new ambassador, it is up to them,” he was quoted as saying by The Mumbai Mirror.

Kings XI Punjab recently announced appointing Mike Hesson, the former Kiwi coach, as their head coach in place of Brad Hodge. Hesson is expected to appoint his own coaches and many changes in KXIP coaching staff are expected.
