IND v WI 2018: Virat Kohli becomes the second most prolific century maker as a captain in ODI cricket

Virat Kohli's rich vein of form continued on Sunday (October 21) as the Indian captain smashed his 36th ODI century to help his team beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.

Kohli, who returned to the Indian side to play the two-match Test series against West Indies after missing the Asia Cup in UAE, looked at absolute ease in the 50-over format, despite not featuring a limited-overs match since July 17.

Chasing a daunting target of 323, India lost Shikhar Dhawan (4) early. However, Kohli (140) along with his deputy Rohit Sharma (152*) shared a massive 246-run partnership for the second wicket to seal the deal with 7.5 overs to spare.

Kohli notched up his ton in 88 balls, which was his 14th as a captain in ODI cricket. He is now only behind former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who scored 22 hundreds as a captain in the 50-over format. However, Virat’s rate of scoring ODI tons as captain is way better than the other captains in the list. While Ponting took 220 innings to compile his 22 centuries, Kohli has played only 50 innings to aggregate 14 ODI tons.

It was Kohli's fourth hundred in ODIs in 2018. Earlier this year, he had smashed three centuries against South Africa. With this innings, Virat also reached the landmark of 60 international hundreds (36 in ODIs and 24 in Tests) and became the fastest to do so. He reached the landmark in 386 innings, taking 40 innings fewer than Sachin Tendulkar.

During the course of his breathtaking hundred, Kohli also made the record books. He completed 2000 runs in a calendar year for the third consecutive year when he was on 42. He became the fourth player to do so after India's Sachin Tendulkar (1996-98), Australia's Matthew Hayden (2002-04) and England's Joe Root (2015-17).

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (6) has piled up 2000 plus runs the most in a calendar year and he is followed by Tendulkar (5), Mahela Jayawardene (5) and Kohli (5).
