Having seen him score an outstanding hundred on debut for India, former batting great Sunil Gavaskar has said that the young Prithvi Shaw gave an early example of his immense potential and showed why he belongs at the Test level.

Shaw exhibited his class and told everyone why he has always been rated as a child prodigy, through a dominating knock of 134 from just 154 balls. It is the confidence and excellent temperament which stood out very early from Pant and he simply raced his way through a magnificent first innings in International Cricket.

"He (Shaw) showed he belonged to the Test level and the West Indies bowlers gave him some loose deliveries to get him going." said Gavaskar on India Today, "It was a very good pitch to bat on but having said that, you still have to get runs and he did that in style, I am very happy for him.. India have got a terrific opening batsman now. But there will be some very stern tests ahead. The opposition does not know about you to begin with but they start preparing for you as you play more and more,"

"His confidence level is very high. Rahul was at the other end... he had got a hundred in his previous Test at The Oval but Shaw took strike." he added, "He did not know how the pitch would behave or see how the bowlers were bowling. His confidence stood out,"

Speaking at the end of Day 1, Shaw gave credit to his father for his hundred and said, "I was thinking about Dad, as he has sacrificed a lot for me.... My first hundred.. it's all for him. Whenever I score, I score for him," he added, "Playing for India, it was a big thing for me. I wanted to make this chance count. It was a good challenge for me and I think I did well in front of these guys. Every cricketer dreams of coming into the Indian side. I did not want to give up my wicket,"
