IND v SL 2020: Lasith Malinga ready to retire from T20Is after India series debacle

Lasith Malinga's Sri Lanka failed to beat Indian team in T20I series.

Lasith Malinga | AFPThe Sri Lankan team were decimated by the Indian team in the three-match T20I series recently, despite the first match was rained off. India won the second match by seven wickets and the third by 78 runs.

The Indian team was clinical in their performances with KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan scoring big runs, while Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini starring with the ball. Meanwhile, on his return to Sri Lanka from this disaster tour, Lasith Malinga told reporters that the Sri Lanka team was just not good enough to make an impact in the 20-over game.

We don’t have that,” Malinga said. He felt that the bowlers were capable of defending totals or restricting the opponents to a decent total, while the batsmen cannot put up 170 runs on board to have a fighting chance.

“I am ready any time. I am ready to quit,” he said while accepting the responsibility for the failure. Malinga led Sri Lanka to the T20 World Cup title in 2014 and remained in charge until early 2016.

The Sunday Island newspaper reported friction in the Sri Lankan team as Malinga was accused of sidelining the former captains. “There seems to be deep divisions in the side. As captain, he has also sidelined his predecessors” including Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews,” the paper said.
