With a 2-0 thrashing at the hands of the hosts India in the three-match T20 International series, Sri Lanka captain Lasith Malinga has registered an unwanted record as captain in the format.
After losing the second T20I in Indore, the Islanders suffered a massive defeat of 78 runs in the final T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday (January 10) to lose the series 2-0 to India with the first match washed out without a ball being bowled in Guwahati.
It was Malinga’s 14th defeat in the T20Is as Sri Lanka captain on Friday, as the veteran pacer has now registered a dubious record to his name in the shortest format of the game.
The Islanders have won just 8 matches out of 22 under the leadership of Malinga and his win percentage is 31.8% – the lowest for a captain in the T20I cricket (minimum 20 matches).
Previously, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was leading the unwanted list and now Malinga surpassed the ace all-rounder to lead the chart.
Here’s the list of the lowest win rate (%) by Captains in T20Is (minimum 20 matches):
31.8: Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka)
33.3: Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh)
34.8: Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh)
35.7: Mashrafe Mortaza (Bangladesh)
36.7: Carlos Brathwaite (West Indies)
