IND v SA 2019: Virat Kohli breaks Mohammad Azharuddin's record in Ranchi Test

Indian captain Virat Kohli has, on Monday (October 21), surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin to record the most number of follow on as captain in Test cricket after he asked South Africa to bat again on Day 3 of the ongoing third and final Test of Freedom Series in Ranchi.

On Monday, Kohli enforced the follow-on for the 8th time as India captain while Azharuddin had done it 7 times followed by MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly for the 5 and 4 times respectively.

In the ongoing Test series, India asked the South Africans to follow on in both the second and the third Test for the first time to follow on in two consecutive matches in the five-day format in 18 years. Australia was the last team that had asked South Africa to follow-on in the Test cricket.

Virat Kohli-led Indian team also became the first national team in the last 26 years who have enforced a follow on in two consecutive Tests, as they last did against Sri Lanka in a home series.

Noteworthy, India won five times while the match ended in a draw the other two times when Kohli enforced a follow on in his seven previous occasions.

Having declared the first innings on 497 for 9 on Sunday, India bowled South Africa out for just 162 by the second session on day 3 with Umesh Yadav taking three wickets while Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Shahbaz Nadeem picked two wickets each, as the hosts took the 347-run lead in the Ranchi Test.

Now, the hosts are on the verge to whitewash South Africa in the ongoing Test series as the tourists are currently trailing by 218 runs with 4 wickets at their hands in Ranchi Test.
