India opener Rohit Sharma created history with his maiden double hundred in the ongoing third Test against South Africa. He became the first Indian batsman in Test history to score a double ton with a six.

Rohit was struggling after coming close to the 200 and looked in a hurry to reach the mark. Over before the lunch, there were few inside edges, which made the situation even tenser. But in the end, he had to wait for lunch to get over to reach the milestone.

Sharma walked back to the pavilion unbeaten on 199 at lunch. After he returned, India played a couple of maiden overs, and that stretched the wait of 200. Finally, a short of length delivery by Lungi Ngidi helped him get the final run. He pulled Ngidi for a six over mid-on and became the first Indian to reach 200 in Test with a maximum.

The 32-year-old also became the 2nd Indian opener after Virender Sehwag to score 500+ runs in a three-match Test series. Sehwag had scored over 500 runs against Pakistan back in 2005 when he used to be dominative with the bat.

Apart from Rohit, other openers to reach the 500-mark runs in a Test series are Vinoo Mankad, Budhi Kunderan, and Sunil Gavaskar (five times).

The 212 in Ranchi Test was Rohit's second 150+ score in the series. He is the first Indian to do so. Rohit's innings come to an end after he was caught on the long leg by Ngidi off Kagiso Rabada's bowling.
