The second Test between India and South Africa at Pune of the three-match Freedom Trophy series ended up in an Indian win by an innings and 137 runs. This also meant that India went 2-0 up in the series with one match to go in Ranchi.
The star with the bat proved to be captain Virat Kohli with his career-best 254* and Mayank Agarwal with 108, his second century in Tests. Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ravindra Jadeja scored half-centuries and aided India in putting up 601/5d.
South African batting lineup couldn’t put a stiff resistance in front of the Indian bowling attack. Ashwin picked 4/69 and Umesh Yadav picked three wickets on his return as South Africa was bundled up for 275 in first innings, despite good batting from Philander (44*) and Maharaj (72). Kohli bravely enforced the follow-on and Indian bowlers, fresh after a night’s rest, plucked the Proteas wickets one by one on the day four.
Dean Elgar made 48, while Bavuma and Philander contributed well, but it didn’t prove to be enough. Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets each to rout the opposition for 189 and won the match by an innings and 137 runs.
Apart from the bowling and batting, the Indian team also impressed with their catching, with Wriddhiman Saha being the best behind the stumps and Rohit Sharma, Kohli and Rahane pouching catches safely in slips. Virat Kohli was named the Man of the Match for his 254.
The Cricket fraternity lauded the Indian team, as this was their record 11 consecutive series win at home and we have the best tweets.
