Indian pacer Mohammad Shami has received praises from the captains of both teams, India and South Africa. After Kohli praised his skill and maturity, Faf du Plessis talked about the angles and lengths he bowled in the first Test.

Mohammad Shami took 5 of the 9 wickets to fall on the fifth day of the first Test between India and South Africa at Visakhapatnam. It is most likely that India will be going in with the same XI in the second Test match that starts tomorrow (October 10) in Pune.

Kohli and Du Plessis, both talked about Shami in their pre-match press conference. The latter revealed that he spoke to one of his pacers about learning from Shami about how he goes about his business.

He said, “I spoke to one of our young bowlers too and said to him that it’s a good learning opportunity for you to sit and watch what someone does when they’re on top of their game in home conditions.”

“Just learn from (the use of) his angles of the crease and how does he reverse the ball. So yeah there’s definitely something to learn from,” he added.

The conditions in India are pretty hot during the day and it is not easy for a fast bowler to bowl long spells in the heat with good intensity. Therefore, a pacer needs to show maximum intensity in the short amount of overs he will be bowling in a spell. The Proteas skipper praised Shami for doing it well.

The 35-year-old said, “There’s a huge intensity about his bowling. You are going to bowl short spells in the heat but when you bowl you have to ensure that you bowl with a lot of intensity and maximize it.”

He also added that his bowlers should learn to attack the stumps like Shami does.

“He’s a guy that hits the stumps a lot. That’s something from a bowling point of view, we have to make sure, we are better at. In the first innings especially, we bowled wide and therefore they scored frequently square of the wicket. So there are a lot of lessons to learn,” he said.
