Amid criticism over his batting temperament and wicketkeeping technique, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has come out in support of Rishabh Pant, calling the youngster a "superb player" who will mature with time.

Pant is having a tough time in the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh. His lack of judgement while going for the Decision Review System (DRS) calls was a major factor behind India’s seven-wicket defeat in the first T20I in Delhi. Moreover, the 22-year-old grabbed the headlines in the second T20I at Rajkot by collecting the ball in front of the stumps, thereby missing Liton Das' stumping.

"He's a superb player. Give Rishabh Pant time, he will be fine," Ganguly told PTI when asked if India is missing MS Dhoni's safe hands behind the wickets.

"He will mature slowly, you have to give him time. India played really well last night."

Having made his Test debut against England last year, Pant has established himself as a leading glovesman in red-ball cricket. The southpaw has already scored two Test tons outside the subcontinent – the only Indian wicketkeeper batsman to do so.

However, Rishabh is yet to find his feet in limited-overs cricket. With Dhoni making himself unavailable for selection after the World Cup 2019, Pant has been a regular feature in India’s white-ball team. The left-hander has played 12 ODIs and 22 T20Is so far but the averages of 22.90 and 20.70 respectively suggest that he is not doing justice to his talent.

Nagpur will host the series-deciding third T20I between India and Bangladesh on Sunday (November 10).
