Indian cricket team vice-captain Rohit Sharma is all set for yet another batting milestone, as he is on the cusp of becoming the third-fastest batsman to reach 9000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket during the series decider in Bengaluru on Sunday (January 19).

Rohit, one of India’s most elegant batsmen, has recently set the new world record by becoming the fastest opening batsman to reach 7000 ODI runs during the series-leveling ODI win against Australia on Friday in Rajkot where he scored 42 off 44 runs before losing his wicket to Adam Zampa.

However, the 32-year-old missed out on completing another milestone during the Rajkot ODI, as the Mumbaikar fell four runs short of reaching 9000 ODI runs on Friday.

Well, the right-hander will have the chance to reach the milestone during the third and final ODI against Australia on Sunday (January 19), as he is set to join his captain Virat Kohli and South Africa batting great AB de Villiers in the list if manages to score 4 runs in the Bengaluru ODI.

If the opening batsman manages to score four runs on Sunday, he will leave behind the likes of Sourav Ganguly (228 innings), Sachin Tendulkar (235 innings) and Brian Lara (239 innings), as the star batsman now has 8996 runs in 216 innings to his name in ODIs.

At the moment, Kohli is the fastest to reach 9000 runs in ODIs taking only 194 innings followed by de Villiers in 205 innings and Rohit could be the third man in the list if he makes the runs in the third ODI.

Noteworthy, Rohit suffered a shoulder injury while fielding during the second ODI in Rajkot but Kohli dismissed any serious concerns about the same, saying he will be fit for the final ODI.

Kohli said in the post-match presentation ceremony in Rajkot, “I asked Rohit briefly just now. It’s that left shoulder which has popped out a few times. There’s no tear, nothing serious there. So hopefully he gets back for the next game.”
