Indian opener Rohit Sharma climbed another ladder during the ongoing second One-Day International (ODI) against Australia in Rajkot, as he set the new world record by becoming the fastest opening batsman to reach 7000 ODI runs on Friday (January 17).

The 32-year-old took 137 innings to reach the milestone, leaving behind Hashim Amla and Sachin Tendulkar to set the new world record, which previously set by South African veteran Hashim Amla in 147 innings to complete 7000 runs in the ODI cricket, during the Rajkot match against Australia.

Now Amla is the second batsman who had achieved the feat in 147 innings, while Tendulkar stands at third spot with 160 innings to reach the milestone.

With his scores of 42 off 44 runs in the Rajkot ODI, the opening batsman also achieved one more feat on Friday, as he became the only fourth Indian opener after Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Virender Sehwag to complete 7,000 runs in the 50-over game.

Here are the fastest openers to reach 7000 ODI runs:

-Rohit Sharma – 137 innings
-Hashim Amla – 147 innings
-Sachin Tendulkar – 160 innings
-Tillakaratne Dilshan – 165 innings
-Sourav Ganguly – 168 innings

Noteworthy, Rohit lost his wicket to the Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa during the 14th over for 42 while trying to play a sweep shot, but he ended up missing the ball as it struck on his pads and was adjudged LBW by Richard Kettleborough in Rajkot.

Indian has set the target of 341 runs for Australia to win the second ODI and the ongoing three-match ODI series as well, as the hosts managed 340/6 in 50-overs in Rajkot.
