IND v AUS 2019: Handscomb terms Mohali ODI win as a great morale booster for the World Cup

Peter Handscomb is taking a lot of heart from Australia's magnificent victory in the fourth ODI of the ongoing series against India. He reckons that such a win will have spurred the visitors' dressing room on for the series-decider in Delhi two days later as well as ICC Cricket World Cup.

Handscomb played a very fine knock of 117 off 105 balls and stretched together a fantastic 192-run stand for the third wicket with Usman Khawaja, who himself got 91. While his effort got completely overshadowed by the once-in-a-lifetime knock which Ashton Turner (43-ball 84) made to see his side through, the 27-year-old was still quite content having done his bit for the overall team cause.

"It is a lovely feeling," Handscomb said at the post-match press conference on Sunday (March 10). "I have no words to describe my feeling. This was the best match of my career so far. This win will give us great momentum for the decider and then the World Cup in England. I am just glad that I contributed in the victory."

"I am happy, I did not know I was going to play ODI again and it's funny how things change. It's nice to get the opportunity to play for Australia and take it. The faith of selectors to keep me in that was nice. To get it( his maiden ODI century as well) today was pretty special."

Handscomb then lavished rich praise over Turner for the astonishing innings that he played and backed him to further replicate such a performance in the international arena.

"Ashton (Turner) is an amazing player," he said. "We have seen what he has done in the Big Bash League (for Perth Scorchers) for the past couple of years. We knew he can get the job done. The way he operated against Bumrah was quite amazing. This knock will give him so much confidence going forward."

"That was awesome. No was moving around with all those superstitions coming into play. That's incredible. To see him come in at the international stage and play an innings of this kind is phenomenal."

But even Handscomb realises that it is the dew under lights that played a major role in the outcome of this game as India's wristspin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were neutralised to a large extent.

"The dew definitely made it difficult for India's wrist spinners," he acknowledged. "Conditions became difficult for them. They are very good bowlers but I think today, we also played them very well."

"Uzzi (Khawaja) and I didn't talk much. We just left each other to play our own games. It was a very good batting pitch. Once the dew came on, we noticed there wasn't much spin, which helped us play our natural game."

"High scoring chase is always special. It just gives you so much competition. We chased down 189 in Bengaluru (in second T20 International) and today we proved that it wasn't a fluke," Handscomb signed off.
