IND v AUS 2019: Vijay Shankar striving to be more "expressive" with the ball

Shankar has played 4 ODIs for India so far and is part of the squad for upcoming home series against Australia.

Vijay Shankar wants to improve his accuracy and not try too many variations whenever he next gets to bowl for India in white-ball cricket.

The fast bowling all-rounder from Tamil Nadu has been a given a huge vote of confidence by the selectors as well as team management.

He is now an integral part of India's plans for the ICC Cricket World Cup, which his selection for the five-match home ODI series against Australia confirmed.

"Shankar's performance in the recent series really changed a bit of dynamics and he brings a double impact to the side that's why have we have included him. We'll see how he performs in the next few matches," chairman of India's national selection committee MSK Prasad said on February 15.

Shankar must have been delighted by what Prasad said. But constant improvement in his game is something he intended to do even prior to this.

"Last time, when I was playing in the Nidahas Trophy, my mindset was to pick wickets," he told India Today, "In the recent times, I was much more restrictive mentally. I was just thinking about putting the balls in the good areas. Maybe, in the Australia series, I will look to express myself a lot more if I get to bowl."

"I think a lot about my own game. I will try and observe a lot about others. While doing so, I felt I was restricting myself a little. I was happy with my pace but I can bowl much quicker than what I bowled there [New Zealand]."

He is a flexible middle-order batsman, who can power hit as well. Though, Shankar is more focussed at the moment on making little adjustments to his skillset with the ball.

"As I told you, I was much more restrictive. For instance, I was using the short-ball, which I believe is my strength, very well in the Nidahas Trophy. But recently, I didn't use the short-ball. I didn't try any variation. I just thought I should hit the right spots. That was my mindset," he signed off.
