Former Indian explosive opener Virender Sehwag believes that Rohit Sharma should be given a chance in the Test cricket after India’s failure in the ongoing Test series in England.

He batted for the inclusion for India’s One Day vice-captain in the Test squad ahead of young gun Prithvi Shaw for the fifth and final Test against England to be played from 7 September at The Oval.

Indian openers have drastically failed in the England series so far, as well as, the batting department has been a major cause of concern for India on overseas tours. Repeated failure of the batting department has been the reason behind India's failure to win tours overseas.

However, Sehwag believes that India can keep Shaw in the Test squad as a third opener but Rohit deserves to play as an opener in the longest format of the game

Sehwag told India TV on Thursday (6 June), “Prithvi Shaw might get a chance in the fifth Test. But I believe, Rohit deserves a chance before the young chap. India can try Rohit first and then call up Prithvi if he fails to deliver. They can keep Prithvi Shaw in the squad as a third opener. In that way, he'll get to learn a lot in the presence of senior players.”

The 31-year-old, who will be leading India in the upcoming Asia Cup 2018, got dropped from the Test team for the Afghanistan Test in June and then for England Test series, which Indicates that Rohit will have to come up with strong performances in Ranji Trophy to be back in the reckoning.
