Dinesh Karthik who initially replaced Wriddhiman Saha for the Test series against England, failed miserably to impress the selectors with the bat. 21 runs from 4 innings and then he was replaced by Rishabh Pant in the third Test match at Trent Bridge.

The young gun had a fantastic start of his Test career as Pant became the fourth Indian wicket-keeper to take five catches on Test debut, as well as, first Indian to open account with a six.

Karthik's failure in the Test series with the bat has not made Abhishek Nayar with whom Karthik has closely over the years lose trust on him.  Abhishek Nayar believes that the 33-year-old hasn’t got out to poor strokes and conditions were really tough in the first two Tests, saying “failure can happen to any cricketer”.

According to a report in Mid Day, Nayar said of Karthik, “It’s a team management’s decision. He has played in two Test matches where conditions were really tough and he has not done well. He played one decent innings. It’s not like he has played bad shots, he got out to good deliveries. Failure can happen to any cricketer. Not every story is going to be a fairytale.”

He further added, “As far as this tour is concerned, I have absolutely zero disappointment. I am only proud of him (Karthik). He has done what he can do best. It obviously has not worked out. In this Test [at Trent Bridge], people are getting runs, and Dinesh is not playing.”

Nayar is also confident that Dinesh will bounce back strongly and will do well in the longest format of the game with both bat and gloves.

Nayar signed off by saying, “Whether or not he would do well, that is only a question mark that is going to be left unanswered. The matches where DK played in, we all know how the conditions were and how they bowled. It can happen to the best, but it’s not an excuse. Dinesh will bounce back strongly.”
