England held their nerve to secure a tense 31-run victory over India in the first Test at Edgbaston on Saturday (August 4).

India were 110/5 in their second innings, needing a further 84 runs to reach their victory target of 194, at stumps on the third day. However, England’s ace pacer James Anderson dented the hopes of tourist by claiming Dinesh Karthik’s wicket in the very first over of the fourth day.

Subsequently, Ben Stokes produced a brilliant over to dismiss captain Virat Kohli for 51 and Mohammad Shami for a duck. The all-rounder sealed the deal by removing Hardik Pandya caught at first slip to finish with 4-40.

As the dejected Pandya was heading towards the dressing room after this agonizing defeat, England skipper Joe Root left the celebration to cheer up the India all-rounder. In a picture going viral on social media, Root can be seen shaking hands with Hardik, who is looking down the ground with disappointment.

Root's antics also led fans to draw parallels between this Test and the 2005 Edgbaston Ashes Test. It is worth mentioning here that England had registered a nerve-wrecking two-run victory over Australia in the 2005 Edgbaston Test.

And after the match, English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was seen consoling the heartbroken Brett Lee, who remained unbeaten on 43 and saw the last man (Michael Kasprowicz ) getting dismissed by Steve Harmison.
