India skipper Virat Kohli mocked his England counterpart Joe Root after running him out on the opening day of the first Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday (August 1).

England were comfortably placed at 216/3 when Kohli’s off-balanced one-handed throw sent Root packing for 80. Subsequently, the Indian captain teased Root by blowing a kiss and mimicked his 'mic drop' celebration. It is worth mentioning here that Root had celebrated England’s ODI series victory by dropping his bat on the ground two weeks ago.

Before the start of second day’s play, Root reacted to Virat’s on-field antics while speaking to Sky Sports presenter Ian Ward.

"I didn't see it in the middle, but obviously saw it last night at the end of play. It adds to the whole spectacle of Test cricket and gives a bit fume to it. It makes sure a very entertaining series if something like that happening so early on. Let's see how things pan out over the course of the five Test matches," the England captain said.

Kohli’s on-field brilliance also triggered the English collapse. The hosts lost 6 wickets for 69 runs in the final session to finish the opening day at 285/9.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the stand-out bowler for India as he recorded his best figures (4/60) in Test cricket across South Africa, England and Australia. Mohammad Shami was the other notable contributor with the ball, scalping 2 for 64 at the crucial juncture.
