England suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of India in the first ODI at Trent Bridge. England had scored world record totals the last two times they had played on the ground, but this time they came up against a top class bowling attack with genuinely talented spinners.

Batting first England could only manage to put up 268 runs on the board thanks to fifties from Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes. They had a very good start with both openers going strong, but then Kuldeep Yadav picked three quick wickets and England were left in shambles. Kuldeep ended up with figures of 6/25, the best by any spinner in England, fourth best by an Indian in ODIs and best ever by a left arm spinner in ODIs.

Shikhar Dhawan got out after a blistering 40, but then Rohit and Virat Kohli took the advantage away from England with a 169 runs partnership. Rohit remained unbeaten on 137*, the highest score by an Indian against England in England and Kohli scored brilliant 75. India won the match by 8 wickets with 59 balls to go.

Twitter was left amazed by the talent of Indian bowling that decimated an England lineup that had conjured up 481 against Australia just last month. Twitter was filled with appreciative tweets for India’s victory and we have collated some of the best tweets.

Here they are:
