Kuldeep Yadav turned out to be the nemesis for the England batsmen, helping India to register an eight-wicket win in the first Twenty20 International in Manchester on Tuesday (July 3). The chinaman bowler finished with astonishing figures of 5/24 in his 4 overs to expose England’s weakness against wrist spinners.

Kuldeep got rid of Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root within a span of 13 deliveries to reduce England from 95/1 to 107/5. He picked up the wicket of in-form Jos Buttler (69 runs off 46 balls) in the 18th over to complete his maiden five-wicket haul in T20I cricket.

In order to combat Kuldeep’s threat going ahead in the series, England are all set to exploit Merlyn spin-bowling machine during their practice session.

“Left-arm wrist-spinners seem quite hard to come by. One thing we can do is with Merlyn, to replicate the angle. It’s a very good machine to get used to that. But it was the first time some guys have faced Kuldeep and it may take one or two games, plus video,” Buttler quoted as saying by The Guardian.

“Old Trafford was one game and it’s Twenty20. We are confident, we will stick to what has served us well, stay true to ourselves and come back hard at them in the next game,” he added.

England did not use Merlyn leading up to the T20I series and its deployment now would not be viewed as a solution.

Sharing his views on facing Kuldeep in the Indian Premier League, Buttler said: “He’s a very good bowler. It’s now down to the guys to gain an understanding. You see it a lot in international cricket that guys burst on to the scene and then people get a handle on them.”

“It’s getting used to the angle as wrist spin is usually right-arm. We know we are a lot better than we showed during that little phase of the game,” he further added.

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff will host the second T20I between India and England on Friday (July 6).
