It was Sydney derby in the Big Bash League (BBL) 09 as Sixers took on Thunder in the 14th match of the competition at SCG on Saturday (December 28).

Opting to bat first, Thunder posted 149/8 in 20 overs on the back of captain Callum Ferguson’s 42-ball 52. Opener Alex Hales also made a notable contribution with 21-ball 32.

Lloyd Pope was the stand-out bowler for Sixers, claiming 3 for 23 in his stipulated four overs while Tom Curran (2/23) and Sean Abbott (2/28) chipped in with two wickets each.

In reply, Sixers managed to tie the match to go into a Super Over with contributions from skipper Moises Henriques (41 off 30 balls), Daniel Hughes (37 off 25 balls) and Tom Curran (35 off 17 balls).

Coming to the Super Over, Chris Morris bowled the over for Thunder and he got rid of Curran in the very first delivery. Nonetheless, Henriques led from the front and scored 14 to take Sixers to 16/1.

Needing 17 to win in the Super Over, Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales came to the crease for Thunder while Curran was given the ball by Sixers.

Only 5 runs were scored off the first 4 deliveries, leaving 12 runs to win from 2 balls. Hales needed to smash two sixes to seal the deal for Thunder but he managed to hit a six and a four which ensured a 1-run win for Sixers.
