Misbehaving MCG surface forces Shield game abandonment

Cricket Australia is hoping the surface will be fine for the summer's Boxing Day Test.

The drop-in deck at the MCG has long been under scanner | GettyThe Victoria versus Western Australia Sheffield Shield game was abandoned on Sunday (December 8) morning after further inspection of the poorly behaving track at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The play was suspended since Saturday with Western Australia batsmen finding it difficult at 89 for 3 with quite a few of the deliveries rising up awkwardly at them. It is when the umpires Phillip Gillespie and Geoff Joshua and match referee Bob Parry, along with both captains Peter Handscomb and Shaun Marsh, consulted with MCG operations and ground staff prior before calling off the proceedings. That, after asking the surface to be rolled up again and doing a proper inspection.

"We’re very disappointed at today’s play being abandoned in the Marsh Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Western Australia," Peter Roach, Cricket Australia Head of Cricket Operations, had said in a statement. "But we also acknowledge that there have been two previous Shield matches at the MCG this season without incident."

If a new date cannot be found to reschedule the domestic match, both Victoria and NSW will be awarded three points each for this game.

The governing body will ensure a different strip is used for the summer's Boxing Day Test against New Zealand.
