Suryakumar Yadav (80), Shreyas Iyer (80*) and Prithvi Shaw’s (53) efforts went in vain as Punjab’s Shubman Gill’s 38-ball 78 denied Mumbai a semi-final spot in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (domestic T20 tournament).

Mumbai were looking good to sneak into the last four stage after piling up 243/3 in 20 overs at Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat on Wednesday (November 27). However, they needed to restrict Punjab to 150 or less to qualify for the semis.

Riding on Gill’s blitz and significant contributions from Abhishek Sharma (47 off 29 balls) and Gurkeerat Mann (40 off 21 balls), Punjab managed to score 221/6 as Mumbai’s dream to qualify was shattered.

This result also confirmed the semi-finalists of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Haryana and Rajasthan made it to the semis from Group A while Tamil Nadu and Karnataka qualified to the final four from Group B.

Earlier in the day, Washington Sundar and M Siddharth spun a web around Jharkhand as Tamil Nadu recorded a comprehensive eight-wicket win in their last Super League match.

On the other hand, Rajasthan bowlers choked Delhi to register a two-run victory while defending the modest total of 133.

The semi-finals of the national T20 championship will be held in Surat on Friday (November 29). While Tamil Nadu will face Rajasthan, Karnataka will take on Haryana.
