Sanju Samson on Saturday (October 12) created history by slamming a breathtaking double century in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match. Playing for Kerala, the elegant right-hander converted his maiden List A century to a big one against Goa in Alur.

Opting to bat first, Kerala lost both their openers – Robin Uthappa (10) and Vishnu Vinod (7) – cheaply. Batting at No. 3, Samson then took the Goa bowlers to the cleaners as he shared a record-shattering 338-run stand for the third wicket with Sachin Baby (127 off 135 balls).

Samson was the aggressor in the partnership as he notched up his 150 in just 99 deliveries. Sensing an opportunity of a double century, he up the ante and exhibited his full range to reach the milestone in 125 balls.

The 24-year-old eventually remained unbeaten on 212 off 129 balls (21 fours & 10 sixes) to help Kerala post a mammoth 377/3 in their stipulated 50 overs.

With this herculean effort, Samson became the highest individual scorer in domestic List A games in India. He also eclipsed Pakistan’s Abid Ali 209* to register the highest-ever List A score by a wicketkeeper.

After Kerala’s thumping 104-run victory, Samson received words of praise from all quarters. Veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also lauded the youngster and urged the Indian selectors to take note of him.

“In transit in Frankfurt on the way to the @IPUparliament meeting in Belgrade when i get the news that Thiruvananthapuram’s own Sanju Samson has hit 200 in a Vijay Hazare 50 over game! Ten sixes, 20 fours. Don’t know if our white-ball selectors were watching?!” Tharoor tweeted in awe of Samson.
