Vidarbha came good on their mission to win the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 and defended their title easily, as Saurashtra fell 78 runs short of the 206-run target in the finals at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur.
Faiz Fazal, Vidarbha captain won the toss and chose to bat first and put 312 runs on the board. Akshay Karnewar, the lower order player top-scored with 73* and Akshay Wadkar (45), Mohit Kale (35) and Akshay Wakhare (34) were the other main contributors. Saurashtra captain Jaydev Unadkat picked 3/54, while Chetan Sakariya and Kamlesh Makwana picked two wickets each.
In reply, thanks to Snell Patel’s 102 and Unadkat’s 46, Saurashtra out 312 runs on board. Aditya Sarwate picked 5/98 and Akshay Wakhare picked 4/80 for Vidarbha to keep the lead to a bare minimum.
In second innings, Vidarbha batsmen fared poorly, as they managed only 200 runs on the board and set Saurashtra 206 runs to win. Aditya Sarwate hit 49, while Kale making 38 and G Satish providing a valuable contribution. Dharmendrasinh Jadeja was the pick of bowlers for Saurashtra with figures of 6/96.
Unfortunately for Saurashtra, they were never in the chase, as their best batsman Cheteshwar Pujara fell for a duck, another poor score after his first innings’ 1. Vishvaraj Jadeja was the major contributor with 52 runs, while only three other batsmen reached double scores. Aditya Sarwate picked 6/59 and completed 11 wickets in the match as Saurashtra was bowled out for just 127 runs.
Vidarbha won their second straight Ranji Trophy title and Aditya Sarwate won the Player of the Match for his 11/157.
